Interviewer: What are some of the common misconceptions and myths that your potential clients have? What do you need to dispel when you’re first talking to them?
Dale: Well, the first of all, they usually don’t have a misconception. They have no ideawhat has happened. They feel like a criminal. They’ve been treated like a criminal. They’ve never been handcuffed before. They never rode in the back of a police car before. They’re shell shocked. They feel shame and embarrassment, and they think that their life has changed forever.
However, that thought is a misconception, because their life hasn’t changed permanently. There’s a lot of defenses and options available. And the best recourse is to hire an attorney. Let the attorney conduct an interview, gather information and learn what options are available to them. Nine times out of ten, the situation turns out much, much better than the client ever believed it would.
Interviewer: That is practical information. Do some of your potential clients have an inkling about what they are facing legally?
Dale: I think that they don’t have any idea. I really don’t believe they know anything other than they’ve been charged with a crime. They have spent some time in a jail and in a police car. But truthfully, many do not have a clue as to what they’re up against. I think that they are aware that it’s a serious matter. But I don’t think they have a conception, truthfully. They just think that they’re in a whole lot of trouble and there’s nothing they can do about it. As I mentioned earlier, that’s the misconception. There is something that can be done.
